Cincinnati locals and visitors alike know that our town is home to the greatest percentage of "chili heads" per capita. We just can't get enough of the steamy dish! The mediterranean-spiced meat sauce can be eaten straight out of the bowl, or used as a topping for hot dogs or pasta. Then finish it off with any combination of cheddar cheese (lots of it), onions, oyster crackers and several varieties of beans. Different topping choices are dubbed, "ways," the most elaborate usually being chili five ways. Regardless of how you choose to consume the dish, you can count on it being hella delicious. While Texans might scoff at the "strange" recipe, locals will tell you that there's nothing strange about it — the only crazy thing would be to try and find a good option outside of Cincinnati. With so many chili parlors around town, it can certainly be tough to decide where to grab a classic chili-topped spaghetti or a coney. These are our personal favorites.

Empress

Three locations

This shop seems like a good way to begin this list, as it's the parlor that started it all. The "coney" (a hot dog topped with chili) originated from immigrant restaurateurs, Tom and John Kirajieff, who were trying to expand their customer base by melding ethnic styles of cuisine with American classics. The brothers served their first coney in 1922 outside of a burlesque theatre named the Empress. Now, the shop is thriving in three different locations. The parlors still serve up the original recipe, so come by and sample a bit of history.

Price Hill Chili

4920 Glenway Avenue, Cincinnati
Whether you're stopping by for breakfast on the patio, a late dinner, or to catch the game with some friends in the Golden Fleece Lounge, Price Hill has it all. Serving the west side of Cincinnati since 1962, the family-owned spot has gained a reputation for its stellar cuisine, regularly drawing patrons from as far as Kentucky and Indiana. While everything on the menu is incredible (and under $10), rumor has it the chili cheese omelet is the way to go.

Blue Ash Chili

Three Locations

There is something for everyone at Blue Ash Chili — even non chili fans (if they exist). Enjoy a burger, barbecue, or the signature dish served up three, four, five or even six ways. Once you've tried 'em all, maybe step it up a notch with the "No Freakin' Way Challenge", which includes two and a half pounds of steaming spaghetti topped with two and a half pounds of chili, finished with two pounds of shredded cheddar cheese and a pound of fried jalapeño caps. Finish your plate in 60 minutes and you won't pay a cent. You also might never eat chili again… nahhh.

Dixie Chili & Deli

733 Monmouth Street, Newport
Located just over the border in Newport, Kentucky, Dixie Chili holds its own when it comes to Cincinnati-style chili. The checkered floors and diner-like atmosphere remind you of days gone by as you dig into some of the best darn chili you've ever tasted in your life. Enjoy the stuff one, two, three, four, five or even six ways. Regardless of your choice, you can eat easy knowing that the recipe is the original 1929 formula from founder Nicholas D. Sarakatsannis, fresh from the kettle every day. (Not in the area? You can order canned Dixie Chili online, although we do recommend you try it in person.)

Gourmet Chili

843 Monmouth Street, Newport
This spot might be newer than the rest, but it doesn't slack when it comes to offering up amazing chili. You'll enjoy a friendly, neighborhood diner-vibe while slurping a hearty serving of the stuff. We hear the gyros are pretty great too if you're still hungry. Don't forget to bring cash!

Camp Washington Chili

3005 Colerain Avenue, Camp Washington
In the heart of Cincinnati's Camp Washington neighborhood, you'll find one of the town's most prized gems. The namesake dish at Camp Washington Chili certainly speaks for itself, and has been satisfying hungry locals and visitors alike since 1940. With a James Beard Award in its pocket for being an "American Regional Classic" and some of the best chili in the country, it is no wonder this place has been successful for so many years. Stop in 6 days a week, 24 hours a day for a taste of what makes our beloved city truly unique.

Pleasant Ridge Chili

6032 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati
The tried-and-true family recipes at Pleasant Ridge Chili are made from scratch daily using fresh ingredients, which gives the chili a bit of an edge. The restaurant has been family-owned since 1964, and is currently helmed by the third generation of the Sideris family. Step into the diner for American favorites — the award-winning gravy cheese fries are some of the best around — or classic chili dishes made with love.

Skyline Chili at the Great American Ball Park

100 Joe Nuxhall Way, Cincinnati

Fans of the Cincinnati Reds know that America's favorite past time is never truly complete without a smothered coney from Skyline Chili. While there are nearly 10 locations of this renowned chili hotspot throughout the state (and even in Kentucky), grabbing a bite here during the big game might be one of the most Cincinnati-esque things to do. We're for it. Find it at sections 103, 116, 130, 518 and 533.

Chili Time Restaurant

4727 Vine Street, St. Bernard
This cozy cafe in St. Bernard emanates a friendly atmosphere that invites you in to stay awhile. You'll feel like a member of the family as you're ushered to a window-side table and served with a hot, steaming plate of chili fries, a coney, or whatever chili-smothered entrée your heart desires — even a chili salad if you'd like to go with a healthier option. Some have tried it and sworn off of other chili parlors as a result. We wonder what the secret is...

Gold Star Chili

2231 Beechmont Ave, Cincinnati
We're sure you've heard of this infamous chili chain, but we don't believe any list would be complete without it. The original restaurant was established in the Mount Washington neighborhood in 1965, but has grown to include 82 locations across Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. The no-frills shop serves chili three, four or five ways. Feeding a family (or just really hungry)? Maybe grab the 10-piece coney crate to go.

Blue Jay Restaurant

4154 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati

Photos courtesy of Blue Jay

Wife and husband duo Danny and Tina Petropoulos opened this restaurant in 1967. Since then, not much has changed — thankfully. The mouthwatering family recipes, comforting interior and old-school atmosphere set Blue Jay apart. Start your day off with a Jacob Special (hash browns loaded with chili and cheese). The flavorful, chunky and juicy chili is sure to carry you through the day.

The Silver Ladle

580 Walnut Street, Cincinnati
This downtown hotspot (with a second location in Anderson) might get you your food fast, but it also invites you to sit on the patio and enjoy it for as long as you please. Pick your base first (spaghetti, greens, fries, a burrito or chips), then pick a chili style (beef, chicken or bean), and top it with any combination of cheese, onions, jalapeños, beans or sour cream to create a dish that meets your preferences exactly — mmm mmm good!

Zip's Cafe

1036 Delta Avenue, Cincinnati
This restaurant is actually well-known for its burgers, but don't let that scare you off. The chili is some of the best in town. Grab a cup or a bowl to enjoy in house, or indulge in a ½ gallon serving to take home and share with the family.

Enjoy!

Home ownership has numerous benefits, from financial (building equity) to social (creating strong community ties). The responsibility and burden of routine home maintenance and yard work, however, are not at the top of that list. For those craving the benefits of owning property without the downside of full responsibility, a condo or townhome may be the perfect solution. Buying a condo or townhome eliminates much of the responsibility and expense of routine home maintenance, such as yard work and home repairs, as well as the larger costs that accompany home renovations. That means residents don't have to shell out the money to repair leaky faucets or broken hot water tanks, they can just place a call to management and put in a maintenance work order. And they don't have to spend weekends planting flowe...

Columbus is bursting with fun things to do. Our innovative food scene, nationally acclaimed museums and unforgettable nightlife makes our town one of the most attractive places to live. Even so, when the wallet is feeling a little light, we might be tempted to stay inside and ignore the incredible lifestyle Columbus has to offer.

Worry not — while there are plenty of opportunities to spend money in Columbus, there are also a number of activities that are just as fun and completely free! So if the budget is looking a little tight this week or you're just looking for a new adventure, check out this list.

Stop and Smell the Columbus Park of Roses

Photo courtesy of George C. Anderson via the Columbus Park of Roses

Ahh, breathe it in. This public garden in the heart of Columbus has grown over the years to include over 12,000 roses or more than 400 varieties. We didn't even know that many rose varieties existed! While late May through mid-June is the best time to visit to find peak bloom, each season offers a unique and beautiful perspective. The park is free year-round and open to visitors dawn to dusk. Also note that a new entrance is in the works and should be open this spring, and if you're looking to be more involved, the park is always looking for volunteers!

Peruse the Worthington Farmers' Market

Established in 1987, the Worthington Farmers' Market is an experience unlike any other. Even if you're not up to purchasing anything, meeting local artisans and farmers and soaking in the culture of our beloved city can be an easy breezy way to spend a Saturday.

Spend a Sunday at the Columbus Museum of Art

The Columbus Museum of Art has something for people of any age. Enjoy art and exhibitions from world-renowned artists and bring your kids to engage in hands-on educational activities. The museum offers free admission every Sunday from 10 am–5 pm, so take advantage!

Take the 52 Hike Challenge of the Columbus Metro Parks

If it's a gorgeous day outside, you might consider visiting one of Columbus's 19 metro parks and hitting the trails. If you're a real go-getter, make it a life goal to hike all of the trails in the area with the 52 hike challenge!

Get Lost in the Book Loft

Nestled in the German Village, one of Columbus's most popular neighborhoods, the Book Loft offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is one of the nation's largest independent bookstores, and is made up of a grouping of pre-Civil War era buildings that were once general stores, a saloon and a nickelodeon cinema. The 32 rooms of bargain-priced books are bound to make you forget about the outside world for just a bit.

Explore Your Artsy Side at the Short North Gallery Hop

On the first Saturday of each month, galleries, restaurants, boutiques and salons come together to showcase Ohio-based artists while singers, saxophonists, improv dance troupes and other entertainers perform in the streets. The event has been a town favorite for over 30 years, and it's not tough to see why.

Feel the Summer Vibes at Rhythm on the River

Photo courtesy of Columbus Recreation and Parks

Rhythm on the River takes place on select Fridays June through September, and features free performances from local arts organizations and national treasures alike. Bring some snacks and a blanket to enjoy a romantic picnic under the stars during the show.

Explore Hocking Hills

Waterfalls, prehistoric caves and spectacular cliff-top vistas await you at Hocking Hills. Head out for an afternoon or weekend trip to experience one of Ohio's most beautiful nature preserves, and hit some of the nearby art galleries while you're at it.

Attend a Free Summer Film at the Gateway Film Center

Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card! In this free summer film series, the Gateway Film Center will show movies that have been adapted from books. All you need to do to get free entry is present your library card.

Hit up a Free Festival

Photo courtesy of Columbus Recreation and Parks

We have no shortage of excuses to celebrate in our city, and we make sure to throw festivals throughout the year to prove it. Want even more reason to celebrate? Some of these festivals, including biggies like ComFest, Jazz & Rib Fest, Doo Dah Parade and the Columbus Arts Festival, are completely free.

Go on a Self-Guided Drive of The Covered Bridges of Union County

The historical covered bridges in Union County were designed and built by Reuben L. Partridge in the late 1860s and 1870s. The five still standing are gorgeous, and offer a window into what once was. Spend a day giving yourself a self-guided driving tour of the bridges, reading up on each one as you encounter it.

Check out the Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens

Take a walking tour of the idyllic Chadwick Arboretum using the free walking tour app, and experience more than 60 acres of flora and trees. It's a good way to experience a slice of nature if you're near The Ohio State University's main campus.

Visit the Sculptures at the Topiary Park

Photo courtesy of the Topiary Park

Inspired by Georges Seurat's famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grande Jatte, this park is truly a local gem. Stroll through the garden and admire the artistry of the sculptures, each of which has a personality of its own.

Volunteer at a Columbus Gives Back Event

Engaging in a volunteer event gives you a chance to experience Columbus in a new way while giving back to the community you love. Columbus Gives Back offers a range of volunteer activities, from cookie baking at the Ronald McDonald House to leading a dance for individuals with disabilities. The events are fun, interesting and completely free to participate in!

Check out an Exhibition at the Riffe Gallery

The Riffe Gallery showcases the work of talented Ohio artists as well as collections from the state's museums and galleries. Admission is free, so stop by at your leisure to see the latest exhibition.

Walk the Scioto Mile

Photo courtesy of Columbus Recreation and Parks

The Scioto Mile, which stretches along the river from the Arena District to the Whittier Peninsula, is a lush, urban oasis home to parks, bikeways and pedestrian paths. Bring your bike, walking shoes, or a picnic and blanket to simply stretch out and enjoy a beautiful day.

Climb the Largest Free Outdoor Climbing Wall in the Country

While you're on the Scioto Mile, stop by the climbing wall. Standing 35 feet tall and covering 6,100 square feet, it's the largest free outdoor climbing wall in the country. Climbers serious about ascending more than a few feet need to bring their own shoes and rope. Not interested in actually climbing? Sitting back and watching the athletes is an activity in itself.

Visit the Thurber House

The Thurber House, once home of humorist, author and New Yorker cartoonist James Thurber, is now a non-profit literary center and museum. Thurber called the Victorian-style building home while attending THE Ohio State University, but the house now welcomes readers, writers and all interested in learning. You can give yourself a tour free of charge.

Have fun exploring!
